Virginia Beach, Va.- At around 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon, Virginia State Police Trooper J.A. Vance was sitting stationary on his VSP motorcycle on the shoulder of I264 near Independence Blvd. when he was struck by a car.

The trooper was monitoring traffic when the Eastbound lane began to slow because of congestion.

An eastbound 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier trying to avoid the slow vehicle in front of it swerved off the road and struck the motorcycle and the trooper.

Trooper Vance has been transported to Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital for treatment of serious but non-life threatening injuries. He will be released from the hospital shortly.

The driver of the Cavalier, 23-year-old Jeremy J.D. Evans of Virginia Beach, was not injured in the crash. Evans was charged with reckless driving and defective equipment.
