Virginia Beach, Va. – A Virginia Beach man has been charged with animal cruelty after a dead puppy was brought to the Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center on Birdneck Road.

The owner of the puppy brought it to the center around 11:30am on Saturday. An Animal Control Officer spoke with the owner and opened an investigation of possible animal cruelty.

A necropsy performed by the shelter veterinarian concluded severe blunt force trauma was the cause of death of the puppy.

27-year-old Michael Carlos Ortega was identified as the suspect and was charged with Felony Animal Cruelty. He has been released on bond.
