Vote how you will, it will always be Tidewater to those of us not gullible enough to buy into the 1980’s campaign.

Hampton Roads. History refers to this area as HR. Tidewater would include parts of the Peninsula as far north as reedville. I worked on the Peninsula for years so I can tell you they don’t want anything to do with Southside. The battle of Hampton Roads had nothing to do with streets.

Lol there’s only 7 cities that matter when it comes to the Hampton Roads/Tidewater area..Va Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Hampton, Newport News and Portsmouth and yes in that exact order.. Anywhere else is Va is the boonies..

Actually the name “Hampton Roads” has nothing to do with the city of Hampton nor the roads/highways in this area. Hampton comes from an honor done for the Second Earl of Southampton England and “roads” is shortened form of roadstead meaning a safe harbor within sight of land. Hampton Roads is formed by the confluence of the James, Elizabeth, and Nansemond rivers into the Chesapeake Bay. Tidewater actually goes beyond Richmond so that’s not an accurate word to describe our area. P.S. Google is a wonderful tool. I suggest many of you use it before commenting.

I grew up hearing it called Tidewater first and then later Hampton Roads. And most of the time that referred to Newport News, Hampton, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, and Suffolk.
