Newport News, Va. – A Newport News father is facing child neglect charges after police say he left two small children home alone.

On July 27th at 4 a.m., police were called out to the 600 block of Daniel Drive.

When they got there, they spoke to the children’s grandparents. They told police that their grandchildren, a 4-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl were left home alone when they were supposed to be supervised by their father Bryan Shaffer.

They told police that the 26-year-old was in charge of the kids from  10:00 p.m. but when they came back to the house at 2 a.m., he was not at home.

When Shaffer finally returned home, he was arrested and charged with child neglect.

The children were home asleep when the grandparents arrived police say. They were unharmed.

My folks left me home alone a few times when I was 7 for several hours at a time and even left me at home alone at age 7 to supervise my two sisters ages 5 and 1 back in 1964 when they attended evening church meetings for a couple of hours almost every week, just 5 miles from downtown Pontiac, MI, a Detroit suburb. What is the big difference these days that results in criminal charges?
