July 4 Celebrations in Hampton Roads and the OBX

Virginia Beach

There will be NO trash or recycling collection on Friday, July 4. Residents normally scheduled for collection on Friday will instead be provided service on Saturday, July 5.

The following Virginia Beach facilities will be closed Friday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day:

  • All Virginia Beach government offices
  • All Virginia Beach community recreation centers, Owl Creek Tennis Center and administrative offices
  • All Virginia Beach public libraries
  • All Virginia Beach city public schools and administrative offices
  • Francis Land House, Lynnhaven House, Adam Thoroughgood House and Princess Anne County Training School/Union Kempsville High School Museum
  • The Sandler Center for the Performing Arts administrative office and box office
  • The Virginia Beach Circuit Court, General District Court, Juvenile & Domestic Relations Courts and Clerk’s Offices
  • Virginia Beach City Landfill and Resource Recovery Center
  • Virginia Beach Convention Center administrative office
  • Virginia Beach Public Health Department

The following facilities will be open to the public, Friday, July 4, during the following hours:

  • All Virginia Beach city parks* and park facilities – 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
  • Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
  • Visitor Center – Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel –  9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Visitor Center – Chesapeake Bay Center at First Landing – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Visitor Information Center – Parks Avenue – 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Visitor Center Kiosks (17th & 24th streets) – 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center – 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Virginia Beach Farmers Market Merchants – 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Norfolk

The City of Norfolk’s government offices, including City Hall, will be closed on Friday, July 4, 2014 in observance of the Independence Day holiday. The closures includes the offices of the Commissioner of the Revenue and the City Treasurer.

Circuit, General District and Juvenile and Domestic Relations courts will also be closed on Friday, July 4.

Libraries, recreation centers and all indoor pools will be closed Friday, July 4, but outdoor pools will be open during normal business hours.  Beach lifeguards will be on duty from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.

Refuse collection will take place as scheduled on Friday, July 4.  Requests for bulk waste collection must be made by 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 3The Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) and E-waste collection site located at 1176 Pineridge Road will be closed on Friday, July 4

Portsmouth

The municipal offices of the City of Portsmouth, including Portsmouth Public Library and all Department of Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services recreation centers, will be closed in observance of Independence Day on Friday, July 4th.

There will be no garbage, bulk, or recycling collections on Friday, July 4th. All Friday routes will be collected in advance on Wednesday, July 2nd. For more information, please call the Division of Waste Management at 393-8663.

The Portsmouth Visitor Center, located at 6 Crawford Parkway, will be open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. For more information, call 393-5111.

The Children’s Museum of Virginia, located at 221 High Street, will be open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. For more information, visit http://www.childrensmuseumva.com.

The Portsmouth Art and Cultural Center will be open from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. on July 4th.

The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum and Lightship PORTSMOUTH will be open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m

All public parks will be open from dawn to dusk on July 4th. The Portsmouth Splash Park at 900 Elm Avenue and Pokey Smokey II at Portsmouth City Park will be open from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. All city recreation centers and the Cavalier Manor Pool will be closed.

The Links Golf Course, located at 140 City Park Avenue, will be open on July 4th from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. For more information, call 465-2935.

Suffolk

In observance of Independence Day, Suffolk City offices will be closed Friday, July 4, 2014. Normal operations will resume Monday, July 7, 2014, at 8:30 a.m. The city observes all State-designated holidays. Independence Day is considered a holiday for the Commonwealth of Virginia and all State offices are closed on this day.

The Suffolk Division of Tourism Visitor Center will remain open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Friday, July 4, 2014.

All Suffolk City Libraries will be closed Friday, July 4, 2014. Morgan Memorial Library and North Suffolk Library will be open Saturday, July 5, 2014.

The Suffolk Art Gallery will be closed Friday, July 4, 2014 through Sunday, July 6, 2014. The galley will reopen on Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at 10 a.m. The Suffolk Art League’s Members Exhibit is currently on display and will continue through July 18, 2014.

All Suffolk Parks & Recreation joint use recreation facilities will be closed Friday, July 4, 2014. All Planet Recreation programs and sites will be closed on July 4th, including the Booker T. Washington, Creekside, Mack Benn Jr., Northern Shores, Oakland and Whaleyville Recreation Centers.

East Suffolk Recreation Center will be closed on Friday, July 4, 2014.

Cypress Park Pool will be open from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, July 4, 2014.

Suffolk’s four major parks – Lone Star Lakes, Constant’s Wharf, Sleepy Hole, and Bennett’s Creek will remain open Friday, July 4, 2014; however, no park attendant will be on duty.

The Suffolk Executive Airport will remain open on Friday, July 4, 2014 with the terminal not open or manned.

Suffolk Public Works Department will pick up trash on the following schedule: Friday’s Route on Saturday. TFC Recycling will follow the same schedule with a one-day delay on service normally scheduled for Friday pickup.
Suffolk Public Works Department reminds you that trash must be placed at curbside no later than 7:00 a.m. on the day of collection. For more information on refuse collection, please call Public Works at 514-7630.

The Southeastern Public Safety Authority (SPSA) Transfer Station in Suffolk will be closed Friday, July 4, 2014 and open Saturday, July 5, 2014 from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. The Regional Landfill will be closed on Friday, July 4, 2014 and Saturday, July 5, 2014.

Newport News

Newport News City offices will be closed on Friday, July 4 in observance of the Independence Day holiday. This includes City Hall, City offices at City Center at Oyster Point, Newport News Waterworks’ customer services offices, the Public Works Operations Center, and both locations of the Treasurer’s Office and Commissioner of the Revenue’s Office (City Hall and Denbigh).

In addition, all Newport News public libraries and the Newport News Drop-Off Center and Compost Facility (i.e., landfill) will also be closed on Friday, July 4.

This holiday does not affect garbage, recycling and bulk waste collections, which will take place as scheduled for the week.

Williamsburg

In observance of Independence Day, City of Williamsburg offices will be closed Friday, July 4, 2014.

Quarterpath Recreation Center will be closed July 4-6, 2014.  Waller Mill Park will be open normal hours on July 4th, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Refuse collections scheduled for Monday, June 30 and Tuesday, July 1 are unaffected by the holiday and will operate as regularly scheduled.

A reminder that there will be no recycling pickups in the City of Williamsburg Wednesday, July 2. The first recycling collection with the new carts will be Wednesday, July 9.

Elizabeth City

Most City offices will be closed on Friday, July 4 in observance of the Independence Day Holiday.  Friday’s recycling and garbage route will be collected on Monday, July 7.
