UPDATE: Body of missing 14-year-old kayaker recovered

UPDATE: Currituck County Sheriff Johnson has confirmed that the body of the missing 14-year old kayaker was recovered Sunday morning at 8:20.  Justin Greene was recovered on the shore where his kayak was found on Friday.

Wilmington, N.C. – The Coast Guard suspended its search Saturday for a missing 14-year-old kayaker in Kitty Hawk.

Currituck County 911 dispatchers contacted the Coast Guard at approximately 7:25 p.m. Friday reporting the teen borrowed a friend’s kayak at 10 a.m., and at approximately 11 a.m., a kayak was found with a cell phone and fishing gear aboard.

The Coast Guard dispatched crews aboard a 25-foot Response Boat – Small from Coast Guard Station Oregon Inlet, an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City and a Coast Guard Auxiliary boat crew to assist.

Coast Guard crews completed their searches for the night at approximately 10:45 p.m.

At sunrise, an RB-S crew from Station Oregon Inlet and a Jayhawk crew from Air Station Elizabeth City resumed their search Saturday along with crews from Currituck County Sheriff’s Office, North Carolina Marine Fisheries and North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.

The Coast Guard searched for approximately 10 hours covering approximately 30 square nautical miles for the missing kayaker.
