Transformer fire causes power outage in Suffolk

Posted

Suffolk, Va. – Suffolk Fire & Rescue and the Suffolk Police Department responded earlier this morning to a transformer fire, which caused a main power line failure.

Emergency Communications received an initial call at 6:04 a.m. advising of a brush fire, and then received additional calls advising that the fire may be near a home.

Firefighters arrived on scene and determined that there was a transformer fire in the 1400 block of Bridge Road with the power pole fully engulfed in flames.

Sparks from the fire also caused a small brush fire in the area.

Firefighters had to wait until officials from Dominion Virginia Power were on scene, since the pole was fully energized in order to extinguish the fire, officials say.

An estimated 3,000 residents were without power in the area. Dominion Virginia Power officials say power has now been restored to those customers.

No injuries have been reported.
