UPDATE: Two adults, one child without a home after fire near Warwick Blvd.

Newport News, Va. – Newport News Fire Department crews are on the scene of an apartment fire in the 300 Block of Hickory Point Road in the north end of the city.

The call came in at 1:24 p.m. Crews arrived on scene at 1:30 p.m. The first arriving crews reported heavy fire showing from the first floor, officials say.

This is an active fire scene.

Hickory Point Road runs off of Warwick Boulevard. Traffic in the area may be impacted.

Officials say the occupants escaped before firefighters arrived. The fire began to spread into an adjacent apartment and melted siding on an apartment. Additional fire units were requested from York County Fire and Life Safety. The fire was declared under control at 2:09 p.m.

Officials say the cause of the fire was unattended cooking.

One apartment unit has been condemned, leaving two adults and one child without a home. The American Red Cross is assisting the family.
