(CNN) — A 16-year-old girl was assaulted and killed Friday at a Milford, Connecticut, high school and a fellow student has been arrested, authorities said.

The assault occurred in a hallway adjacent to a stairwell, Milford Police Chief Keith Mello said at a press conference. He didn’t say if a weapon was used. A member of the school staff witnesses part of the attack, Mello said.

Staff members performed life-saving measures and emergency medical services were called, but the student was pronounced dead at 7:43 a.m. Friday at a hospital, Mello said.

The student suspected in the attack, a 16-year-old male, was taken into custody, Mello said. His name was not released and no motive was provided.
