Petty Officer 2nd Class Mark A. Mayo will be posthumously awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal on Friday at Arlington National Cemetery.

Mayo, 24, stepped in to save a shipmate on the USS Mahan on March 24th. He was shot to death while protecting her from a civilian who had boarded the ship and disarmed the Petty Officer on watch. Naval security forces then shot and killed the civilian shooter.

Mayo was assigned as a Master at Arms for Naval Security Forces at Naval Station Norfolk.

The Navy and Marine Corps Medal is the highest non-combat decoration awarded for heroism by the United States Department of the Navy to the members of the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps.

The award will be presented to Mayo’s family by Vice Admiral Mark Ferguson in a private ceremony prior to his burial. He will be laid to rest at 1:00 p.m. on Friday.
