A well-intentioned petition has been posted on the White House’s web site asking that Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Mark Mayo receive the Medal of Honor after he was shot to death protecting another sailor at Naval Station Norfolk last week.
However military experts say he does not qualify for the honor because his death aboard the USS Mahan did not occur during combat, according to the Navy Times.
Mayo may be eligible for a very rare Navy and Marine Corps Medal.
That medal ranks below the Silver Star and Distinguished Flying Cross, but above the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Meritorious Service Medal.
