Newport News man charged after child found with visible red marks

Newport News, Va. – A Newport News man is charged with child abuse and assault after police found a 9-year-old with visible red marks on his body.

On March 23, 2014 at approximately 11:50 a.m., officers responded to the first block of Ivy Farms Road in reference to child abuse.

When officers arrived, they met with Fredrick Taylor and his two children, a 9-year-old son and a 14-year-old daughter. Officers saw red marks on both arms, the chest, and back of the 9-year-old. The 14-year-old had no injuries.

The injuries on the 9-year-old were consistent with being hit with a belt and extension cord, police say.

Fredrick Taylor was arrested and charged with child abuse and assault on a family member. Child Protective Services was contacted and the children were released to a family friend.
