Residents of the Bible Belt may (or may not) be surprised by new info pegging them as the biggest consumers of gay pornography over anywhere else in the nation, according to numbers released by Pornhub, one of the world’s biggest porn sites.
The site set out to answer the question, “Do the states with legalized gay marriage watch more gay porn than the states where it is still illegal?”
Site data showed that, yes, states with legalized gay marriage watch seven percent more gay porn than states without legalized marriage.
The site also says it found the highest percentage of gay porn viewers is in the South, where gay marriage is illegal in all states.
In every single state in the South, the percentage of “gay” viewers, or viewers of gay porn, is higher than the average of viewers in states that allow gay marriage, according to their data.
According to the numbers, Mississippi, Louisiana and Georgia lead the South in gay porn consumption, and the state with the highest percentage of gay porn viewers in the nation is Mississippi, at 5.6%.
All three of those states have laws on the books that prohibit most activity found in porn.
For states that have legalized gay marriage, the top three consumers of gay porn are Hawaii, New York, and California.
Separate reports in 2011and2012 echo the findings that porn consumption runs high in the Bible Belt states.
This is the first confirmation from a porn site. Pornhub is one of the world’s biggest porn sites, with over 35 million daily users.
A spokesperson for the company told partner Buzzfeed how they arrived at the stats.
“We pulled terms and traffic to gay searches. We couldn’t break down “lesbian” because we don’t track our users on a micro-granular level (i.e., gender, sexual orientation, etc.).
So for example, lesbian searches can account for, like, 40% of a city’s searches, but 80% of those searchers may likely be men.
So to answer, it’s a rundown of gay porn from male users.”
