Owners of dog accused of killing yorkie on Chicks Beach charged

A Virginia Beach couple has been charged after their one-year old pit bull mix attacked and killed a six pound yorkie named Stoley on Chicks Beach.

32-year-old Kristen Dowdy’s heart was broken over the loss of her little companion.

On Friday, Virginia Beach Animal Control spokesperson Wayne Gilbert says the community took action to call Crime Solvers with information that led them to 51-year-old Stephen Chambers and 49-year-old Tracey Sordi as well as their one-year-old pit bull mix, named Polly.

Polly is now being held at Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center.

Kristen’s mom Kathy was the one walking Stoley the day it happened.

She says Polly wasn’t on a leash when she grabbed Stoley from behind and wouldn’t let go.

“I could only think this was a nightmare that i would wake up and this wasn’t really happening 14:34:18 she says Polly’s owner was too far down the beach to do anything about it and left before police showed up,” says Dowdy.

Animal control officers say Chambers and Sordi will be in court on March 3rd.

At that time, a judge will hear evidence and decide what happens next.

NOT all dogs are viscious. Sadly pit bulls are always the ones getting the heat when other dogs bite and go after animals, sadly we probably wont know what caused the dog to do what he did. I am glad they found the owners, they should of been more responsible with their dog, hate to see him put to sleep, maybe they can muzzle him when out or even have his teeth pulled .sorry to the lady who lost her dog..

Thank goodness the owner responsible for letting his dog off leash, has been found & will face a judge. However, whether it was a Pitbull, Cocker Spaniel, Dachshund or Chihuahua (ALL are on the 10 biters list) the blame is on the owner. Would’ve never happened otherwise. [BTW - the location is spelled Chic's Beach...not Chicks Beach...just sayin']

(1 non-pit type killing) [Rachel Honabarger - 35 yrs old - mauled to death by her own GSD mix] Coshocton, OH.

(1 husky-mix killing, unknown if the other half of the dog was pit bull) [Jordan Lee Reed – 5 yrs old] Kotzebue, AK

(1 Shiba Inu killing) Mia Gibson – age 3 months, of Gibson, OH – mauled to death by family Shiba Inu.

Three of the pit bull type dogs were BULL mastiffs, ie 40% pit-fighting bulldog.

If 27 of 33 dead were killed by pit bull attack, that’s 82% dead by pit attack, 9% dead by ‘molosser’, 3% by some kind of GSD mix, 3% by a husky + possibly pit mix, 3% by Shiba Inu.

If you count the pit-mix mastiffs as pit bull types, that’s 91% killed by attacking pit bull types. Pit types are only about 5% of the entire dog population.

The man who ran into traffic kept pit bulls himself. He knew perfectly well what the two stranger pit bulls that were chasing him would do if they caught him, so he preferred to risk a swift death by oncoming car.

534 maimed by pit type dogs 2013 (as of November.28).
