New commission could impose new tolls

Posted

A house subcommittee unanimously approved the bill today and it’s expected to clear the General Assembly.

The bill would make a commission of mayors and other lawmakers from Hampton Roads.

They would be in charge of what projects are funded from the new regional tax.

The bill’s sponsor, Suffolk Republican Chris Jones, says the new commission would prevent any type of private public partnership like the one that put tolls on the tunnels from ever happening again.

But the bill would also give this commission the power to put on new tolls where they see fit.
