Newport News officer hurt in accident while responding to robbery

Newport News, Va. – A Newport News officer was hurt Tuesday night in a crash while he was responding to a call about a robbery.

Calls came in about the robbery at 7:37 p.m. at the Shell Station in the 1000 block of Jefferson Avenue.

They say a suspect who was wearing a black beanie, stocking cap, tan jacket, white shoes, and dark pants went into the store with a handgun demanded money and left the store.

The officer who was responding to the call was involved in a crash at Jefferson and Harpersville Road. They say the cruiser and a minivan collided.

The officer and one person in the minivan were taken to the hospital. Officials say the officer’s injuries were not life-threatening. A dog was also examined.

They say the officer had lights and sirens activated when he approached the intersection.

Police are still investigating the crash and the robbery.
