Plaza Middle School and Lynnhaven Elementary School were placed on external lockdown for about 45 minutes due to a nearby situation involving police.

Virginia Beach Police say at approximately 11:45 a.m., officers responded to a residence in the 200 block of Hospital Drive to do a well-being check.

When officers arrived, they heard what they believed to be gunshots inside the residence.

A perimeter was established and the nearby schools were placed on external lockdown as a precaution because of their proximity to the scene.

The lockdown was lifted around 12:30 p.m. Parents were all notified via phone call.

The SWAT team made entry into the home and located a man dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
