Portsmouth, Va. - A body found Friday in the bathroom at the Walmart store on Frederick Boulevard in Portsmouth has been identified.

Police say the victim is 37-year-old John Beau Calland of Virginia Beach.

Calland's body was found inside the store, and was removed from the bathroom near the employee area. Walmart says the man was found inside of the family restroom and the door was locked. They say a maintenance worker tried several times to clean the restroom last night but he was unable to get in. He thought a customer was inside.

When a worker tried to get into the bathroom this morning, the door was still locked. The worker knocked on the door and no one answered. The worker then asked a manager to open the door with a key and that's when they made the discovery.

Police say the victim was not a Walmart employee.

Officers arrived on scene and found the man unresponsive and unconscious.

He was pronounced dead after officers arrived. His cause of death is still unknown.

Walmart issued the following statement:

“This is a sad situation and we recognize it’s a difficult time for the family and friends of this man. Our thoughts are definitely with them as they come to grips with their loss. We are cooperating with police and will provide any information we have that might be useful for their investigation.”

“We are working with the store to learn more about the decisions that were made. It was never our intention to show any disrespect and we apologize to those we may have offended.”
