Norfolk, Va. – On Friday, the president of Norfolk State University, Tony Atwater, announced he was unexpectedly fired by the school's Board of Visitors.
The board voted 7-4 to oust the president who has been there for two years.
“It was sudden, unexpected, and without cause,” says Atwater at a press conference.
Atwater says political reasons were behind the termination. He says there were discussions about NSU merging with Old Dominion University, and he believes this could have contributed to the board’s decision.
Atwater says he was given the choice to resign, but he chose to be terminated because of principle.
