Portsmouth, Va. - Portsmouth police are currently investigating the death of a 1-month-old, police tell NewsChannel 3.

The roommate of the mother whose one-month-old baby boy died today, says he's not sure how something so sad happened inside the Portsmouth home.

He told NewsChannel 3, the baby was in good health and suddenly died.

Now police are looking into the death, calling it suspicious.

The man didn't want to talk on camera, but says he was outside after noon Wednesday when the mother, who was inside the Woodstock Street home called 911 saying her baby wasn't breathing.

Another roommate describes the boy's mother as caring and attentive.

Both roommates said the newborn had never had any problems before and was just shy of turning one-month.

Neighbors saw the same thing.

"She was a good mom. She took care of the baby boy very well as far as I've seen," a neighbor says.

The two men have no relation to the mother and say she didn't have any other children.

They add the baby's father would stop by occasionally to help out.

It's unclear at this time whether he was home when the one-month-old was found having trouble breathing.

Neighbors also tell NewsChannel 3 the mother just moved into the home right after the baby was born.

Around 3 this afternoon, police got a search warrant and went through the house trying to figure out what if anything caused the death of the child.

Portsmouth police have not said if they've determined the cause of the child's death, though again, it is being labeled as suspicious.
