Franklin, Va. – Two pit bulls were shot in Franklin Saturday morning after attacking police, injuring an officer.  According to Lt. T.W. Whitt with the Franklin Police Dept, one of the dogs died and police are still looking for the other dog.

According to Whitt, officers were initially sent to Southern Food Store on South Street around 8 a.m. because of reports that two pit bulls were running loose around the store.

While an officer was checking outside, the two pit bulls attacked the officer, biting his arm.  He was treated by EMS and taken to the hospital.

The dogs returned to their yard where no one was home, so officers set up a perimeter until Animal Control got there.  According to Whitt, when the Animal Control Officer arrived, the dogs became aggressive and attacked officers again.  Officers shot both dogs, killing one of them.  The other dog was wounded but ran away.  Officers are still searching for that dog.

Charges are pending against the dogs’ owner.  If you see the wounded dog, call the Franklin Police Department at (757) 562-8575.
