Portsmouth, Va. - A 47-year-old Portsmouth man was taken into custody Tuesday morning and charged in relation to two grocery store robberies at a Food Lion and Farm Fresh on Victory Boulevard.

After further investigation, he was also charged for two similar crimes in Franklin.

A vehicle matching a description of one described by witnesses at one of the robberies, was spotted by a Portsmouth Police officer on Monday night.

The officer coordinated a search of the area and 47-year-old Michael Richardson was found inside a nearby hotel room. He was immediately recognized from surveillance photos.

Richardson was also wanted for failing to register as a sex offender. He was immediately taken into custody.

Officers recovered evidence at the hotel linking Richardson to several robberies.

Richardson is also facing charges in Suffolk for similar robberies.
