Rally in honor of Trayvon Martin held at Norcom High School

Portsmouth, Va. - A rally was held in honor of Trayvon Martin at Norcom High School on Sunday.

The event organized by teenagers and promoted on Facebook and Twitter brought out over a hundred people, including the mayor.

The rally began near the baseball field of the high school at 7pm and continued throughout the city of Portsmouth.

"Yes I got mad, I snapped and then I came to my senses and I was like let me do a movement that will start to bring the community together,' said rally organizer Nate Cummings.

Many people wore black hoodies and held up posters that had skittles glued on them along with words of endearment.

Portsmouth was not the only city that organized a rally post Zimmerman verdict large cities such as New York and Chicago did the same.

"The takeaway from all of this is civic engagement, and for these young people to get involved with the political process and make sure your voice is heard," said Portsmouth Mayor Kenneth Wright.

Organizers told NewsChannel 3 regardless of what people think about the verdict they hope the case will bring awareness to race issues that exist today.
