Oscar Smith Track star Michael Cherry was named Gatorade Virginia Boys Track and Field Athlete of the year on Thursday.
Cherry was a senior this past season and is set to head to Florida State to compete on the school’s track team. His accolades include a win in the 400 meter event at the group triple a state meet with a time of 46.02 seconds.
His time ranked first in the nation among all high school runners. He also finished third in the 200 and ran the final lap of the 1,600 relay team helping his team seal fourth.
Cherry has won twice at the new balance nationals in the 400 and holds the national indoor 300 record at 33.5 seconds set in March.
