Kill Devil Hills, N.C. – A Kill Devil Hills police captain’s quick action saved the life of a heart attack victim at a construction site.
On May 28th Captain Mark Evans received a call of a man down at a home under construction on N. Virginia Dare Trail.
He arrived shortly after the call went out and found a man lying in the sand. The man’s coworkers said he’d been down for 3-4 minutes.
Evans, a certified EMT, grabbed his medical equipment including oxygen and AED (Automated External Defibrillator). The department had recently purchased two AED’s and one of those units happened to be in Evans’ police vehicle at the time of the call.
Evans began lifesaving measures by using the AED and giving the victim CPR focusing on chest compressions. Before the KDH Fire and Dare County EMS arrived, Evans had performed CPR for approximately six minutes and used the AED to deliver three shocks to the victim which restarted his heartbeat.
Once the fire and rescue personnel arrived, they administered more advanced medical care and transported the man to the Outer Banks Hospital.
Once at the hospital, he was stabilized and transported by Nightingale Air Ambulance to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
The victim was released Tuesday June 4th with no major complications.
