Chesapeake, Va. - A woman is fighting for her life after being hit by a train on Liberty Street in the South Norfolk section of the city.

The woman’s nieces were with her when it happened.

“We actually like seen her foot, as soon as the train went by it just like flew off,” says Deon Robinson, the woman’s niece.

At 3:15 Monday afternoon, they were walking with their aunt Latisha Woodberry to the store.

They could hear the eight car Norfolk Southern train making its way across Liberty Street in South Norfolk.

"I was behind her and I told her I wasn't walking past period because I was just going to wait 'til the train left anyway," says Robinson.

Woodberry decided to risk it; it was a move that put her in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Initially, her nieces thought she died.

The time frame for Woodberry's recovery is unclear.

She had surgery after being taken to Norfolk General where she remains.
