Norfolk, Va. - A Norfolk police officer shot a man Tuesday morning after the man - who was running from the officer - circled back and tried to steal the officer's car. The officer was dragged for a short distance before shooting the man and regaining control of the car.

The shooting happened near Beechwood Avenue in Norfolk around 11:30 a.m. and initially began as a traffic stop.

Police say the uniformed officer was working a special enforcement detail in an unmarked Norfolk police car when he saw a suspicious vehicle pull into the parking lot of a 7-Eleven.

The officer also pulled into the lot, activated his lights and prepared to speak to the people inside of the car.

As the officer approached the car, one of the suspects opened the door and ran away. The officer ran after the suspect.

Police say the suspect circled back to the front of the 7-Eleven and tried to steal the officer's car.

The officer reached inside of the car to try to stop him and the man pulled away, dragging the officer.

The officer then shot the suspect and was able to apprehend the suspect and gain control of the car.

Police say the man was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to recover. He is now facing several charges, the details of which have not been released.

The other person who was in the car at the time of the traffic stop is still being sought for questioning.
