Teens arrested in shooting death of Newport News mother

Newport News, Va.--Newport News police have made arrests in connection to the shooting death of Phyllis Felicia Vinston, a 27-year-old mother who was killed while trying to protect her children. 

A 15-year-old and a 16-year-old have been charged with one count each of murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a juvenile. 

Police say on Thursday, Jan. 10th at around 7:53 a.m., police arrested the 16-year-old in an apartment off of J. Clyde Morris Blvd.

On Sunday at around 2 a.m., police received calls about gunshots in the 2200 block of Madison Avenue in the Walker Village Apartments. 

When officers arrived, several were detained including the 15-year-old who was wanted in connection to the death of Vinston. He was then arrested on the charges. 

Both suspects are now being held in juvenile detention. 

Police are still unable to say if Vinston was the intended target.
