Update: Police need help to solve homicide case in Smithfield
Update: Police are asking for the public’s help to solve a homicide case from 2012.
Travis Newby was shot and killed in December of 2012 in his apartment after an attempted robbery police say. They are now hoping to get more information about this case.

Smithfield, Va. – According to Smithfield police, a man was shot and killed on Wednesday night after an altercation.
They say calls came in at around 7 p.m. about a person who had been shot in the 740 block of Wrenn Road in Smithfield at the Jersey Park Apartments.
Officers say they found a victim outside of an apartment. They say it appeared as though there was an altercation inside of an apartment that spilled over onto the sidewalk where the victim was found.
According to Chief Steve Bowman of Smithfield Police, the victim has been identified as 36-year-old Travis Newby.
Police say the victim was initially transported by ambulance, but he was later picked up by helicopter and taken to Riverside in Newport News where he was later pronounced dead.
Officials say the suspect ran from the scene. Police are now looking for a black male, 5’7 to 5’9, thin build, with short dreadlocks, wearing a black jacket, white t-shirt, and black skull cap.
