Hertford, N.C. – A 10-month-old boy was killed by a dog in Hertford Tuesday evening.

Police say they received a call at 6:15pm of a boy not breathing as the result of an animal bite at a home on West Railroad Street.

Police and members of the Perquimans County Rescue Squad administered CPR to  James O'Neal Hudson, who was transported to Albermarle Hospital in Elizabeth City where he later died.

According to police, the Hudson was attacked by the family’s mixed breed dog while he was in the care of his grandmother.

The Perquimans County Animal Control Officer has taken custody of the dog and it is being confined in the tri-county animal shelter in Tyner.

The sheriff's department is in the process of seeking a consent release from the dog’s owner so the animal can be turned over to the county to be destroyed.
