Old Dominion University wide receiver Reid Evans, Jr. shakes his head merely at the mention of the rape charges he's facing.
Police say Evans and fellow ODU student Jack Ly drugged two women and raped them in an ODU campus dorm room.
"It's been incredibly stressful," said John Hooker, Evans' attorney.
According to Hooker, Evans and Ly met two women at the Virginia Beach oceanfront last month. Hooker says Evans and Ly agreed to pick the girls up from Hampton early the next morning.
"They left Hampton at 2:30 in the morning to go back to these two young men to the dormitory room," said Hooker. "What is their purpose of going back there? They weren't going back to play monopoly."
Hooker says there's no doubt about it - Evans and Ly had sex with the women. However, he says there's no truth to claims Evans and Ly drugged the women and had sex with them while they were incapacitated.
"They're saying there was a date rape drug involved," said NewsChannel 3 Investigator Jessica Larche.
"Well if it was, it didn't come from Reid Evans, Jr. or Jack Ly," responded Hooker. "He is not a person who needs to force himself onto any female with drugs, or date rape drugs, which he didn't do."
"Why would these women lie about being raped?" asked Larche.
"It's not for us to show motive and we can't look into the minds of these two women," responded Hooker. "But people do things for various reasons, you know, maybe to save face?"
Evans, a top wide receiver for ODU, has been suspended from the team and the university.
Monday, a judge granted him a $25,000 bond after more than a dozen mentors, friends and family spoke to his character. His co-defendant, Jack Ly, was granted a $50,000 bond Thursday morning.
While Hooker is only representing Evans, he believes a toxicology test on the women will prove both Evans and Ly's innocence.
"Hopefully, the truth will come out, Hooker said.
A preliminary hearing on the rape charges is scheduled for August 6, 2012.
