Chesapeake deputy arrested, charged with rape
A Chesapeake sheriff’s deputy is charged with raping a woman in Virginia Beach.
Virginia Beach police arrested 29-year-old Michael Southerland on Friday.
Police say earlier this month, an acquaintance of his told police he raped her last month.
They are not saying exactly when or where.
Southerland has been with the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Department for six years.
He’s worked with the Civil Enforcement Division serving court subpoenas.
Southerland is out of jail on administrative suspension, which means he will be suspended without pay after using all of the paid leave he’s earned.
He is referring all questions from NewsChannel 3 to his attorney.
