There was a Police chopper in the sky and armed officers on the ground.

They were all looking for a black bear that wandered behind the South University parking garage near Mount Trashmore, which is just a hop across Interstate 264 in Virginia Beach.

Witnesses say they saw the bear walking through a parking lot and looking at the mulch.

Police say it is likely the bear walked back into the woods which is exactly what they wanted it to do.

Lt. Dave Squires of the Virginia Beach Police  department says “The bear is not a threat to people, so there was no need to go searching.”

Squires also says that it’s not uncommon to see black bears in the resort city especially during this time of the year.

Last April, another black bear climbed up a tree on Shadow Lane.

He says in that case, it becomes a problem when the bear feels threatened and chooses to defend itself.

Squires adds, “The chance of a bear being scared by your actions or your dog’s actions are pretty high."

That’s why Animal Control officers show up to keep that from happening by keeping crowds away.

Though the bear wasn’t seen again today, Beach schools near the Bonney Road area kept their children indoors and had extra security at the bus stops.
