NORFOLK, Va. - WGNT CW 27, Scripps Broadcastings’ CW television affiliate in Norfolk has announced a partnership with Old Dominion University and Norfolk State University to broadcast a unique college basketball match-up.

WGNT 27, News 3's sister station, broadcasted the ODU versus NSU Men’s Basketball game on Wednesday, December 2, with tip off at 8 p.m. The game aired on TV and right here in this story.

The Spartans hosted the Monarchs at Echols Hall on the campus of NSU. This was Norfolk State’s first home game against Old Dominion since the 1968-69 season and the second ever.

ODU defeated NSU 80-66.

“Although I know many Hampton Roads fans are disappointed that in-person attendance is not possible for this intracity basketball game, we are so pleased that WTKR/WGNT agreed to televise this game, allowing our community to watch the action from the safety of their homes,” said NSU Director of Athletics Melody Webb. “We appreciate the partnership with News 3 and the cooperation of Old Dominion. It will be a great opportunity for our community to have a distraction from the current crisis and enjoy a night of college basketball between Norfolk's two Division I programs.”

WTKR News 3 Sports Director Adam Winkler hosted pre-game and halftime coverage. Veteran play by play man Patrick Johnson and Brian Mull, basketball analyst for The Athletic, called the game. ODU and NSU last played during the 2017-18 campaign at the Norfolk Scope Arena. The Spartans will make the return trip to ODU's Chartway Arena during the 2022-23 season.

"WTKR/WGNT have been great broadcast partners over the years for local sports. Televising the ODU vs. Norfolk State men’s basketball game is another example of News 3 continuing to add value to and meeting the needs and interests of our local community,” says Dr. Wood Selig, ODU’s Athletic Director.
