Stanley scores 31 as Hampton men's hoops upsets Winthrop, 87-81

ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) — Ben Stanley scored 31 points and Davion Warren had a double-double to lead Hampton to an 87-81 upset of Winthrop on Saturday.

Jermaine Morrow added 23 points with six assists for Hampton. Entering Saturday’s game, Morrow (24.3 points per game) and Stanley (21.9) were ranked third and eighth in the nation for scoring.

Stanley shot 13 of 17 while Warren was 7 of 8 and scored 18 points with 11 rebounds. Stanley fouled out with 1:51 left with Winthrop leading 79-74 while Warren exited with 16.2 seconds remaining and the Eagles still up five.

The Pirates (13-15, 8-7 Big South) won just their second road game in 14 outings. Winthrop (19-10, 13-3) won its first 12 conference games but has since lost three of four. The Eagles were tied with Radford atop the Big South coming into Saturday’s game.

Winthrop trailed by 13 with under six minutes left before going on a 10-0 run. But Stanley responded with consecutive baskets and the Pirates went 8-of-8 at the line in the final 1:39.

D.J. Burns scored 19 points and Hunter Hale 18 for Winthrop. Chandler Vaudrin grabbed 10 rebounds while Josh Ferguson had six boards to go over 700 in his career.

The teams split the season series with the Eagles winning 116-95 on Jan. 16.

Hampton faces Radford at home on Thursday. Winthrop plays South Carolina Upstate on the road on Thursday.
