VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The ever popular Ferguson North American Sand Soccer Championships has been canceled for 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Organizers said they were eager to get back to normal. The championship was originally pushed back but has now been canceled.

They listed rising COVID-19 numbers, requirements to be safe and sanitized and "logistical challenges," as some reasons why the decision was made to cancel.

550+ teams had already registered, the release said.

This weekend usually brings the largest beach soccer tournament in the world to the Oceanfront and generates between $8 million and $11.5 million in economic impact for Virginia Beach.

Here are the steps organizers provided for people who registered:

  • Team registration fees - will be 100% refunded. We have to do each refund manually, so please be patient with us as this may take up to 2 weeks to process every individual team refund. Refunds will be issued to the original payment method received (credit card/check).
