Hampton Lady Pirates Ashley Bates, Laren VanArsdale earn All-America honors

HAMPTON, Va. (HamptonPirates.com) - Hampton Lady Pirates senior Ashley Bates and sophomore Laren VanArsdale were named to the BOXTOROW Division I All-America team. Bates was a first team selection, while VanArsdale was a second team honoree.

Bates finished a stellar career as a two-time Big South Defensive Player of the Year and a two-time All-Conference selection. In her senior season she averaged 13.4 ppg, 2.4 apg, 3.4 spg and finished ranked in the top ten nationally for the second year in a row in steals.

She earned Big South Conference Player Of The Week once and had three 20+ points games to go with seven games of five or more steals topped with a season high of 27 points against USC-Upstate. Bates was first in steals (3.4 spg), tenth in scoring with (13.5 ppg) and 17th in rebounds (5.6 rpg) in conference. This is her second straight first team selection.

VanArsdale was a 2019-20 First Team All-Big South selection after she averaged 15.7 points, 3.4 assists per contest. She was named BOXTOROW National Player of the Week for the week ending February 16 and recorded seven 20+ points games and seven games of six or more assists. Her season-high in points was 31 against Longwood and had seven assists against High Point and Liberty.

In the conference this year she was first in minutes played (37.4), fourth in free throw percentage (.779), fifth in scoring with (15.7 ppg) and sixth in assists (3.7 apg). She had a season-high four 3-pointers in the opening win at Alabama and recorded a three-game stretch in February where she averaged 25.7 points, 4.3 assists and 2.3 steals while hitting 23-of-35 (65.7%) from the field, 6-of-8 (75%) from 3-point range and 25-of-29 (86.2%) from the line.
