Hampton & Newport News Public Schools cancel high school winter sports due to rising COVID-19 metrics

HAMPTON, Va. - Hampton City Public Schools and Newport News Public Schools announced Tuesday that they are canceling high school winter sports to ensure the health and well-being of student-athletes

The cancellation of high school winter sports season includes basketball, indoor track, swimming and cheerleading. The decision to cancel wrestling occurred on December 7, 2020.

The decision, made in cooperation with Hampton City Schools and Newport News Public Schools, comes amid the increasing COVID-19 cases and positivity rates on the Peninsula and the risks associated with increased contact through practices and competitions.

The cancellation of winter sports does not impact the planning for the adjusted fall and spring sports schedules:

● Season 2 (Fall) February 4 and 15 – May 1
○ Cheerleading (Feb. 4)
○ Cross Country (Feb. 15)
○ Field Hockey (Feb. 15)
○ Football (Feb. 4)
○ Golf (Feb. 15)
○ Volleyball (Feb. 15)

● Season 3 (Spring) April 12 – June 26
○ Baseball
○ Soccer
○ Softball
○ Tennis
○ Track and Field

Hampton City Schools and NNPS will continue to monitor regional and local COVID-19 metrics.
