NORFOLK, Va. — Diversity and equity give value to every human being regardless of their race or background.

On March 8, 60 high school students were invited to attend the 13th annual "Diversity Dialogue Day."

The event was held at the Webb Center at Old Dominion University. Students and educators were involved in interactive workshops, conversations, and seminars all centered around the theme of "Stopping Stereotypes in Schools."

One student from Kempsville High school tells News 3, events like this bring those in the community together.

"Look at the world stage like, it is a lot of tension when it comes to like these types of controversial subjects. You know diversity, equity, and inclusion are controversial facets when it comes to race, religion, and sexual orientation but when you look at things on a broader scale there is one thing different about you, you have to be able to just accept that and go on with it, they are still the same person that just does something that is a little bit different," said Zsacari Scott.

Many educators collaborated with others from different school districts to help create a safe and inclusive environment for all students and staff.

The principal of Kempsville High School tells News 3 that if they can create an inclusive environment for students early on in their educational careers, they can show them that the world is full of endless possibilities.

"For them to see that they can do something that they didn't even think about doing, and feel like I belong in this environment while feeling supported," said Melissa George.

With the information students and educators learned throughout the workshops, the hope is that they will step out of their comfort zones to promote inclusivity.
