CHESAPEAKE, Va. — It’s time to take a walk with Patrick.

And today Patrick is taking us to a park that’s definitely off the beaten path, but you say it’s well worth the drive.

Absolutely.

The walking trails are great, but this park really has so much more to offer.

Interestingly, Northwest River Park is in southeastern Chesapeake, very close to the North Carolina line. It’s about 15 miles down the Chesapeake Expressway, and another four miles off of that road so it’s pretty remote.

So I was surprised by just how much there was to do there. Of course, we were there for the hiking trails and there are plenty of those spread across the park’s 763 acres.

The 7 miles of trails are well maintained and usually pretty wide. Most of them eventually lead to the park’s namesake, the Northwest River.

You cross plenty of small bridges along the trails, there are more than a dozen bridges in the park.

While we were there last Saturday, which was pretty hot and humid, the tall trees gave us plenty of shade and it wasn’t too bad.

Some online reviews I read complained about the bugs, but we didn’t have any issues.

If you’re a biker, there are two miles of bike friendly trails and even more that are open to horses.

In fact, a corner of the park is set aside for equestrian activities. You can also rent a kayak at Northwest River Park.Lots of folks were doing that.Or you can do some fishing, and the park is popular with campers.

There are 66 campsites and two cabins you can rent, and I’m not done.

There’s also mini golf, an 18-hole disk golf course and a popular playground. So while Northwest River Park may be a bit of a drive for you, your family will have plenty to do once you get there.
