VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - A rainy Saturday couldn't keep dozens of cars from lining up outside Southern Bank's Virginia Beach Boulevard location to have important documents shredded.

News 3 and Southern Bank once again partnered for the Shred-a-Thon.

The event ran from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday and within minutes of kicking off, cars had formed a long line outside the bank's branch.

Volunteers would accept boxed documents from those who came out, dump them into trash cans, which were then loaded into Shred-Ace trucks for immediate shredding on site.

Executives with Southern Bank say more people are becoming victims of identify theft, so it's important that people properly dispose of documents that contain their personal information.

“I would say most people that come through are probably not Southern Bank customers, but we’re here to support the community no matter where you bank," said Trent Dudley, the bank's Regional Executive.

At the event, volunteers from News 3 also accepted final donations for the Beach Bags Food Drive that occurred earlier in the week.
