PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Statistics from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration show 5.6% of Virginians continue to struggle with Alcohol addiction. They also show the percentage is increasing close to the national average of 5.8%.

Many are deciding to pass on alcoholic drinks this month, taking part in what’s called "Dry January," and there’s a new business in Portsmouth for those who are participating.

Customers of Beyond Vegan Cell Food can now enjoy the perks of what's called a "Sober Bar." The owners named it "Legally Different," aiming to provide a social atmosphere without liquor.

One customer, Reginald 'Reggie' Richardson, said this bar helps him and others who may not drink feel included.

"The area that it's in is surrounded by a bunch of bars and night activity and stuff. So, a person that don't drink would feel left out," Richardson said.

Richardson said he spent most of his life drinking until about 5 years ago. He made the choice to stop due to his relationship with alcohol, being rocky.

"When I was younger, drinking came in between me making certain choices for myself," he said. "I used to correlate having fun with drinking, so now I don't have that fear no more because I know I can have fun without the drinking."

Bar owner, Dr. Jackie Jackson said stories like Richardson's are part of why she began this business. For Dr. Jackson's partner, Kissie Pettaway, the bar's co-owner, it hits even closer to home.

"With a family member, I have actually had to do several hospital visits and doctor's visits because it had basically led to Cirrhosis of the liver," Pettaway said. "That almost took their life and so, for me personally, to see a loved one that way-- and someone who's very close to me at that--that was a struggle for me. It actually gave looking at drinking a new perspective."

It's a perspective that is said to also be new to Hampton Roads; the owners said this is the first bar of its kind in this area. They say lots of research went into the health and flavors of the drinks that they offer.

Richardson is hoping that the community can take part in the bar's success.

"You can't say you don't like something until you try it. So, give it a try," said Richardson.

This new bar is opening right in time for Portsmouth's restaurant week, you check out all the mocktails and drinks offered at beyondvegancellfood.com.
