PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Portsmouth native music superstar, Missy Elliott, is coming to Portsmouth to celebrate the dedication of the new 'Missy Elliott Boulevard.'
Portsmouth Vice Mayor De'Andre Barnes announced Wednesday that Missy Elliott and a "special guest" will be in the city for the street dedication on October 17.
The event is free and open to the public.
The dedication will feature a parade, starting at 3:30 p.m. and more. The parade will be inside of Manor High School Stadium. Bands scheduled to be part of the parade are NSU, Hampton Univ, Manor HS, Churchland HS and I.C. Norcom, ECSU & Virginia State University bands.
Missy will also be presented with the Key to the City.
Portsmouth City Council unanimously voted to rename a portion of a street "Missy Elliott Boulevard." The street, currently named McLean Street, serves the Victory Crossing Shopping Center, Tidewater Community College, and the future Portsmouth Rivers Casino. The street naming ceremony will take place at Manor High School football field, 1401 Elmhurst Lane.
Melissa Arnette Elliot was born on July 1, 1971, at the Portsmouth Naval Medical Center. Missy Elliott grew up in the Hodges Ferry community and went on to graduate from Woodrow Wilson High School, now Manor High School, in 1990.
Missy shared her excitement about the name change on her Instagram. The superstar was filled with excitement and gratitude.
Gov. Youngkin will be present to present proclamations to honor Missy Elliott.
