VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Six local college entrepreneurs presented their businesses in a shark-tank style competition for the ultimate prize of up to 50-thousand dollars.
They represented schools all across Hampton Roads in the Entrepreneurship Organization’s Global Student Entrepreneurship Awards. They pitched ideas for a panel of judges, with ideas ranging from tech, real-estate, funeral services and even board games.
"I really love coming out here, getting the opportunity to promote my business and it's a learning opportunity, and networking all in one. So, coming out to these events are always super fun," said Jack Oppenheim from VCU, first place winner.
Some students said this experience was more than just a competition.
"I agree, the group was pretty diverse. People had different backgrounds, came from different spaces and going to different places. It's extremely important because people need to see that there's people that look like them out there that are doing big things. And so, I think it really starts with you as an entrepreneur and if you don't see it, create an environment where you can bring it to the table," said Jaden Fowlkes from Chesapeake TCC, 2nd place winner.
The competition was held on the Virginia Beach campus of Tidewater Community College. Prize winners received certificates, mentorship, and investment opportunities. For the 1st place winner, they will advance to finals, which will be held in Africa.
