CHESAPEAKE, Va. —Keeping a school clean is not easy.

That's why Hickory High School in Chesapeake recognized their head custodian, Leroy Harper, for his hard work and efforts to keep students safe and healthy.

Harper was named "National Rock Star Custodian." An award was presented to him from the Academy of Cleaning Excellence in Orlando, Florida.

Students, teachers, and Harper's family gathered in the school's auditorium Thursday to acknowledge his efforts. While he walked through the halls the students recited sweet messages about his dedication.

The student band and choir also performed a selection to show their appreciation for Harper.

Harper said having his family's support means the world to him.

"It was an honor just to see them and without family you really have nothing," he said. "So, I'm grateful that I have a family to have my back. Not only my back, side, but all around."

Mr. Harper has been serving the Chesapeake School district for 12 years—six of those years have been at Hickory High School.
