Granby High School grad becomes member of elite U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard

NORFOLK, Va. – A man who grew up in Norfolk recently became a member of the elite U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard.

Kion Wells, who graduated from Granby High in 2020, joined the Navy half a year ago, according to the Navy Office of Community Outreach. Just six months later, Wells is a U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guardsman.

His newly assumed role comes after he completed an intensive 10-week training program. As a member of the Ceremonial Guard, he’ll be responsible for representing the service in Presidential, Joint Armed Forces, Navy, and public ceremonies in and around the nation’s capital.

Wells told the Navy Office of Community Outreach that he joined the Navy to gain a different outlook on life.

“Serving in the Navy has taught me to always break barriers that you may have been afraid to break,” said Wells.

He added that he’s “most proud” of making it to the Ceremonial Guard, and he aims to make the world a better place while serving.
