NORFOLK, Va. - Have you gotten that W-2 yet? A City of Norfolk initiative Saturday offered people free help navigating the new tax season.
As an enrolled agent, LuSundra Everett has the highest credential awarded by the Internal Revenue Service and her tax knowledge is invaluable.
Saturday morning, Everett offered it up free of charge to the group of a dozen or so sitting in front of her at Slover Library; answering questions about changes this tax season, common scams to avoid and red flags to watch out for when working with a tax preparer.
The tax presentation is the second installment of "Mastering Your Money," a monthly event put on by Bank On Norfolk, which itself is part of a regional effort to help people get in control of their finances.
“I wanted to really create a safe space for people to be comfortable asking those questions because sometimes it can be difficult to ask those, especially tax questions," said Amena Anderson, Bank On Norfolk coordinator, who organizes the Mastering Your Money presentations. "Not wanting other people to know what you don’t know, but the only way you’re going to learn something is if you first admit, ‘Hey, I don’t understand this completely.’”
The first presentation in December focused on credit reports and scores, Anderson tells News 3.
She's planning others during each of the coming months on topics including contracts and stocks and bonds.
Anderson says each will be free with sign up and location information on Norfolk's Bank On webpage.
