CHESAPEAKE, Va. - A race supporting women's health initiatives is back for its fifth year.

On Sunday, June 4, the Goal Seekers 5k Run/Walk will kick off at 8 a.m. at Oak Grove Park in Chesapeake.

People participating are asked to write their own personal goals on their race bibs, but beyond that, $40 entry fees support a growing mission to help local women live their healthiest lives.

The T2 Fitness Foundation is a nonprofit working to reach women in high-risk populations, including those in the African American or rural communities. The organization's T2 Fresh Start Initiative is a free, 12-week program for women in those populations who have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, heart disease or diabetes.

“Income plays a role in food and what you know about activity, so we want to try and help educate people, given where they are on their journey, given what their budget is," said Tasha Turnbull, founder of the foundation, Fresh Start Initiative and Goal Seekers race. "There are certain things you can do to improve your lifestyle.”

Fitness expert Tasha Turnbull speaks to News 3 about the return of her Goal Seekers 5k Run/Walk event.

A long-time fitness instructor, Turnbull has been able to grow her Fresh Start Initiative over the years with the help of grant funding. She says she's helped hundreds in Hampton Roads and Western Tidewater, but it also requires her to raise money in order to keep the program free for participants.

The 2022 Goal Seekers race brought in $10,000, she tells News 3, and with 200 already signed up for 2023's race, there's hope she can top that amount.
