RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia individual income tax filing deadline is approaching on May 1, however due to the pandemic there is an automatic extension to file.
Virginia Tax is encouraging taxpayers to file returns online.
“Filing electronically is the safest and most efficient way to file your return,” said Tax Commissioner Craig M. Burns. “Also, the fastest way to get your refund, if you have one coming, is to request it via direct deposit.”
If you need additional time to file your individual income tax return, there is a six month automatic extension for Virginia. Returns will now be due on November 2.
In addition, taxpayers also have an extra month to pay taxes this year. Any individual income tax payments are now due on June 1. To avoid penalties, tax payers will need to pay at least 90% of tax liability on or before June 1 and pay any outstanding tax liability with a return filed by the extended due date.
