SOUTHAMPTON Co., Va. - A Southampton County man currently residing in an assisted living facility in Northampton County, North Carolina tested positive for the novel coronavirus Thursday.

According to Will Drewery with the Western Tidewater Health District, the patient, who is in his 60s, was taken to a local hospital for an unrelated medical emergency.

"This case is a great example of the collaborative public health effort that occurs when we have patients that cross state boarders," said Dr. Todd Wagner, director of the Western Tidewater Health District.

This case is currently not included in the totals posted Thursday on the Virginia Department of Health website. The VDH reported 460 total cases and 13 deaths as of Thursday.

As of the VDH's last update, no cases had been reported in Southampton County.
